What Is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a simple surgical procedure in which the vas deferens—the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the penis—are cut and sealed to provide permanent sterilization. This minor surgery is performed in a urologist’s office and is a highly effective method of contraception.

The Procedure

Before the vasectomy, the scrotal area will be thoroughly cleaned and shaved. Local anesthesia will then be administered to numb the area. While you won’t feel sharp pain, you’ll still be able to sense touch, pressure, and movement during the procedure.

After the Procedure

  • Recovery: You can typically resume normal sexual activity within a few days. However, the procedure is not immediately effective.
  • Post-Procedure Testing: After your vasectomy, you’ll need to schedule a follow-up appointment for at least one semen analysis. This test will confirm that no sperm remain in your ejaculate.
  • Contraception During the Waiting Period: Since the vasectomy isn’t effective right away, it’s important to continue using contraception until your semen analysis confirms the absence of sperm.

Myths About Vasectomy: Contrary to some misconceptions, a vasectomy does not affect your ability to orgasm or ejaculate. It also cannot cause impotence. The procedure does not significantly change the appearance or volume of your semen.
