Urocuff Test: Assessing Bladder Function and BPH Symptoms

A healthy, properly functioning bladder is key to long-term health and well-being, especially for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The bladder’s ability to effectively “pump” urine is directly related to symptoms like frequency (frequent urination), nocturia (nighttime urination), hesitancy (difficulty starting urination), weak stream, and dribbling.

By assessing the health of your bladder and considering your symptoms and overall health, you and your urologist can determine the best treatment options for your prostate.

What is the Urocuff Test?

The Urocuff Test is a non-invasive diagnostic tool used to evaluate bladder function in men with urinary disorders (LUTS). This test provides your urologist with valuable information to better understand the underlying causes of your symptoms.

How It Works

The Urocuff Test measures key aspects of bladder function, such as pressure, urine flow rate, and the volume of urine voided. Here’s how it works:

  1. Cuff Placement: A small cuff is placed around the penis.
  2. Urination: You begin urinating into a flow meter.
  3. Cuff Inflation: The cuff inflates to slow or interrupt urine flow.
  4. Rapid Deflation: The cuff rapidly deflates, allowing urine flow to resume.
  5. Cycle Repeats: This cycle is repeated until your bladder is empty.
  6. Data Collection: The test measures the interruption pressure versus the flow rate to determine bladder function.

Test Results: The data is summarized in a modified nomogram, helping your urologist assess your bladder health.

Preparing for the Test

To ensure the test goes smoothly, it’s important to arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Here’s how to prepare:

  1. Drink Water: Drink 32 ounces of water one hour before your appointment.
  2. Arrive Early: Arrive at the doctor’s office 10 minutes before your appointment.
  3. Full Bladder: Make sure you feel the sensation of needing to urinate, like the “Urgency” face on the scale.
  4. Avoid Bathroom: Do not urinate before your test, as you need a full bladder.
  5. Check-in: Upon arrival, let the receptionist know you’re scheduled for a Urocuff Test and share how full your bladder is.
  6. Wait: After checking in, wait for a clinician to bring you in for the test.

Following these steps will help ensure accurate results and a smooth experience during your Urocuff Test.
