What is High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)?

HIFU is a treatment option for certain prostate cancer patients. This advanced technology uses high-intensity ultrasound waves to target the affected area of the prostate. The focused ultrasound energy generates localized heat that destroys cancer cells, while preserving healthy surrounding tissue.

Advantages of HIFU

HIFU offers several benefits as a focal therapy for prostate cancer treatment, including:

Non-invasive and non-surgical: HIFU requires no blades, cuts, or radiation, making it a non-invasive procedure with no incisions or scarring.
Minimal side effects: Patients typically experience a low risk of common side effects such as erectile dysfunction and incontinence.
Preserved quality of life: Since HIFU targets only the cancerous tissue, patients can maintain a good quality of life and return to their daily activities shortly after the procedure.

Outpatient procedure: HIFU is an outpatient treatment, meaning patients can return home on the same day.

How Does a HIFU Procedure Work?

During the Procedure

The patient is placed under general anesthesia for comfort. Using the Focal One robotic system, the urologist performs the HIFU procedure with precision, ablating only the cancerous tissue while sparing healthy tissue.

After the Procedure

Following the procedure, most patients are discharged the same day. To minimize the risk of urinary retention caused by swelling, a temporary catheter will be placed. This catheter is typically removed during the first follow-up appointment, which occurs 5 to 7 days later.

Ongoing follow-up includes PSA testing at three months, six months, and one year after the procedure to monitor progress and ensure the treatment’s effectiveness.
