Cystoscopy: A Diagnostic and Treatment Tool

When certain bladder issues arise, a cystoscopy can help doctors diagnose and treat the problem effectively. At Southern Westchester Urology, our experienced providers are trained in the latest medical technologies to ensure you receive the highest level of care.

What is a Cystoscopy?

A cystoscopy allows doctors to examine the bladder and urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) closely. It is commonly used to diagnose a variety of bladder conditions. During the procedure, a thin, tube-like instrument with a small camera, called a cystoscope, is inserted into the urethra. This provides a detailed view of the bladder and urethra.

In addition to visualization, doctors can also perform biopsies (tissue sampling) or remove small bladder stones or tumors through the cystoscope.

When is a Cystoscopy Performed?

Cystoscopies are often recommended for patients experiencing bladder problems, such as frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) or bladder obstruction. This procedure can help diagnose conditions like:

  • Bladder diseases
  • Bladder stones
  • Enlarged prostate

Anesthesia Options for Cystoscopy

A cystoscopy can be performed under local, general, or spinal anesthesia, depending on the patient’s needs:

  • General or Spinal Anesthesia: Patients will be fully relaxed and won’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.
  • Local Anesthesia: While patients remain awake, they may feel a strong urge to urinate or experience a mild burning sensation during the procedure.
